Gujarat. The state government is considering a major change in the Public Distribution System (PDS). Like gas subsidy, now the ration money will be transferred directly into bank accounts. The beneficiary will be able to purchase grains. The Food Department has prepared the proposal. In the form of a pilot project, the urban areas of Saughpur and Raisen district of Hoshangabad have been selected. By linking beneficiaries’ bank account and beneficiary of both the cities to the base, subsidy of PDS grains will be transferred directly into their accounts (DBT).

So far the distribution of ration is being done in Madhya Pradesh. Under PDS wheat is being given 18-19 rupees and 25 rupees for rice subsidy. A member is being given 5 kg of grains and 35 kg ration per month to a family of Antyoddha category. A kilo of salt is also given as well. The Food, Civil and Supply Department has given the presentation of DBT Pilot Project to the Government of India three days earlier. The Food Department says that pilots will implement this project after the success of the project. This scheme is already in Jharkhand-Uttar Pradesh. Feedback from both the states is also being taken.
There will be two options
The pilot project provides that beneficiaries can buy cereals from the market by subsidizing money and also from the ration shop. On the basis of the results of Obeedulganj and Sohagpur, the option that would be beneficial, will be implemented in the system. Both options can also be continued.
We have given a presentation to the Central Government regarding DBT. The pilot project is being started in two urban areas. The strategy of Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh is also being raised so that DBT can be implemented successfully.
